Our Furever Plan ensures that a beloved pet companion is rehomed with love after their parent passes away.
Numerous studies have shown that our furry friends are highly attuned to our physical and psychological well-being. When we feel stress or experience illness, they’re much more aware of these changes than we can imagine. They offer their love and comfort in return, remaining by our side and providing unconditional support.
Ask any pet parent, and they’ll tell you all about the times their pet provided much-needed comfort as they went through a challenging time. Nothing speaks to the power of the human-pet relationship more than when an pet parent undergoes terminal illness, enters hospice care or reaches the natural end of their life on earth. In these times, their pet companion offers heightened support and love as they move through their end-of-life journey. Faithful and steadfast, our pets try to make the process as peaceful and painless as they can.
It’s a remarkable symbol of the unwavering bonds we forge with our pets. We love and nurture them every day, they support us when we need them most, and it’s only natural that we must ensure they are cared for if they outlive us.
What Happens to Your Pet?
End-of-life journeys include a series of difficult but crucial decisions for hospice patients and their loved ones. When pet parents who enter hospice care are making necessary arrangements for their estate, they and their families may wonder who will take responsibility for the pet after their passing. This discussion begets even more questions: Will they have the financial and emotional means to care for them? What will happen if loved ones are unable or unwilling to care for the pet? What will happen if no one is available at all to adopt them? For a pet parent, one of the most important pieces of unfinished business may be ensuring that their pet has a new home when they pass.
Unfortunately, government entities view pets as property in the eyes of the law, and too often pets are surrendered to animal shelters or animal control in the event that no one can look after them when the pet parent has passed. This contributes to a harmful cycle of animal surrender that’s extremely problematic — shelters already face an enormous amount of challenges. Their facilities are often under-resourced, there are consistently more animals who are surrendered than there are animals who are adopted, and in some cases, they euthanize animals because they can’t afford to maintain care for every one in their facility.
No pet should experience the trauma of losing their parent and then being surrendered to an animal shelter. They don’t deserve to leave a loving home only to enter an unpredictable situation. Hospice patients who care for pets must know that they have more options available to them for safeguarding their pet’s future.
If you or your loved one is in hospice care or approaching end of life, you can register a pet in advance or when needed at Furever Plan. You’re in good, strong caring hands as we work with you to rehome your pet if this approach is necessary. In the midst of difficult decisions and important arrangements, you can rest easy knowing that your pet has already been accepted into our program and that we will arrange for your pet to move immediately to foster care as we search for a forever home with a new, loving family.
Our Furever Plan service includes a thorough approach to matching your pet with their next home. When you register, our team of adoption specialists will collect all of your pet’s information from photos to history to medical records. We’ll create a profile, share it with our community of prospective adoptive pet parents, and manage the process of screening and reviewing applicants. Once your pet has been placed for adoption, we’ll work with their new pet parents to equip them with their medical records, create a rehoming agreement, arrange transportation (if necessary), and set them up with pet licensing and microchip information.
Furever Plan meets a tremendous need in the pet community. Our pets experience trauma and grief after the loss of their parent, and we want to make that process as gentle as we can for them, while honoring the wishes of their late parent. For individuals who are facing this decision, know that by trusting Joyful Pets to rehome your pet, you’re giving your loved ones peace of mind, and you’re giving your pet a selfless gift. You’re providing the chance to continue their lives surrounded by love, happiness and security.

We’re passionate about ensuring that your pet is rehomed without the possibility of surrender to a shelter. Rehoming with Joyful Pets through Furever Plan promises this won’t happen.
